Garrett Hedeen

Garrett currently works for Austin-Travis County EMS as their Safety Specialist.  He is responsible for providing occupational safety expertise to a department with a $110 million budget!  His responsibilities include accident investigation, risk mitigation and improving the overall safety culture.  Garrett has a Master of Science in Occupational Health and Safety and a Master of Healthcare Administration. His previous work experience includes EMS management at a large service and has been a Paramedic since 2006 for Indianapolis EMS, returning to work a few times per year.

 

Garrett and I met when he served on the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians Board of Directors with me in 2022 and 2023. He is chairman of the NAEMT EMS Workforce Committee and assisted with the development of the EMS Safety Officer Course.  In his spare time he is an official for high school sports.  Garrett adds an area of expertise to Edgar Solutions that is greatly needed for the demographic of agencies we are trying to assist.

ï‚· Performs investigations on ambulance collisions, facility inspections, respiratory fit tests, and provide
education for incumbent and cadet employees on a variety of safety topics like ambulance driving,
general risk mitigation strategies, and infection control.
ï‚· Provide occupational safety expertise and guidance utilizing historical injury data to agency with a $110
Million budget to improve overall safety culture.
ï‚· Utilized training in Microsoft suite of power tools and software (including forms, power automate, and
Power BI) to streamline and automate collision and duty-related injury data from newly designed forms
into powerful interactive safety dashboards that update automatically on submission.

MANAGER | IU HEALTH BLOOMINGTON-EMS | 4/2020 – 11/2022
ï‚· Chief EMS officer of county-wide hospital-based ambulance service covering 411 square miles, handling
all 20,000 + EMS requests within, for both 911 and interfacility transport care.
ï‚· Manage daily operations which includes a shift commander, paramedic chase, and 7 ambulances at peak,
in addition to providing thousands of special event hours for Indiana University and other local entities.
ï‚· Responsible for recruitment, hiring, coaching, and discipline for service with 63 direct reports.
ï‚· Lead enrollment efforts to become a research site for EMS Fatigue Study by Dr. Daniel Patterson.

needs assessment, build, and move into 2 new stations, a 3-apparatus crew station, and a 20,000 square

new facility in December 2021 (during peak omicron COVID).
